So reading the graphic novel Nevermore I really didn't know what to expect. I really don't have much knowledge on Edgar Allan Poe. I mean I know I have read The Tell-Tale Heart, but other than that I really haven't read much of his material. For the most part I have enjoyed the stories. The pictures however have given me some mixed signals. Like with Tell-Tale Heart the pictures were really cool and added a sweet addition to the story. I really liked looking at the eyes and how they have changed throughout the story. With The Fall of the House of Usher and its pictures it made it harder to follow for me. I couldn't tell the two guys apart at sometimes and I noticed in class that I wasn't the only one. I guess overall I would have really appreciated these stories on their own or with little illustrations. When we read the first story The Raven I really didn't enjoy the story at all. I just didn't like it. I didn't understand it and it didn't allow me to connect or anything. I really like how before the story starts the author gives you a glimpse of what the story was or what it’s kind of about. I love how they have made a lot of these stories more modern so that we can relate to them. And with a lot of pictures it helps with the understandings of what Poe is trying to say.
One question that was brought up in class was if the blind woman in The Tell-Tale Heart and if she was insane before she met the patient or if the patient drove her to that. I think it was mostly the feeling she got from the patient but also there had to had been some underlying issues along the way to make her snap at this point.

I thought the illustrations were really cool. I also liked the eyes and how they changed in the Tell-Tale Heart; I thought it was really clever. The pictures in The Fall of The House of Usher were a little hard to follow. I feel like the pictures added a lot to the stories and I think I appreciate the stories more because of them. They added to the mystery and creepiness of the stories in my opinion. I also find the author’s comments at the beginning of each story very helpful. I like how it gives background and tells me what to expect so I can follow the stories easier. It was nice that they made the stories more modern so that we could relate to them.
ReplyDeleteI think that the patient drove the blind women in insanity. She totally psyched herself out because of that guy. I got the feeling that she was totally normal before she met him. It was her imagination that got the best of her and drove her crazy and eventually led to murder.
I also agree that the illustrations were good for these stories. I had read these stories before and they where kind of confusing without the pictures unless you had someone help explain it to you. I could understand what was going on a lot better because of the illustrations, except in the "Fall of the House of Usher". That was the worst one because it had the worst pictures and the least about of words out of any of them. This mad it extremely hard to follow and I know I would not of had any clue what was happening if I had not read the book before this.
ReplyDeleteI also think that the blind lady in "Tell-tale Heart" had some other issues, but really who wouldn't. It would be hard enough to trust people that you could not see but then she felt the face of someone that was deformed in some way.
